With significant uncertainty over long-term fossil fuel prices - an increasing number of large domestic property owners, community associations and public building operators are seeing biomass as an economically viable and environmentally friendly option. Regulatory measures such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and increasingly stringent building regulations are encouraging the use of wood heating for new builds and refurbishments.

The government has ambitious targets to increase the use of renewable heating, the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a mechanism designed to encourage this. This means that a wood heating system now makes even more sense. Click on the link opposite to find more about the RHI.

A single log or pellet boiler installation starts at around £18,000. Over its lifetime this will offer significant fuel cost savings as fossil fuel prices inevitably rise. The RHI gives a guaranteed and generous income over a 20 year period. This means that for the first time a large number of wood heating installations make sense from both a financial and environmental point of view.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is the government-funded scheme to encourage low carbon heating which came into effect on 1st July 2011.

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a world first and pays a fixed tariff for eligible non-domestic systems installed after 15 July 2009 as part of the Phase I implementation. Phase II is aimed at domestic installations and comes into effect in 2012. Domestic installations are defined as single boilers supplying a single residence. Although the domestic RHI will not be available until 2012, householders can still claim a one-off Renewable Heat Premium Payment for a new installation and then be eligible for the RHI when it does come into effect. The level of the Renewable Heat Premium Payment has yet to be confirmed, but the announcement of the RHI indicated that the payment level for biomass installations will be around £950.

There are some key differences between the RHI and the Feed-in Tariff (FIT). RHI tariffs are paid by Ofgem from tax revenue, not by the energy companies as is the case for the FIT and as there is no national grid for heat, importing and exporting heat is not relevant.

To receive RHI payments the first step is to install an eligible wood heating system. For small systems of 45kW or less, the equipment installer must be MCS registered. In the future, larger installations will be required to meet stringent air quality standards. The system must include a heat meter to measure the energy produced by the boiler. The owner registers the system with Ofgem and provides quarterly meter readings. Payment is then made direct to the owner based upon the size of the system and the metered energy produced.

Phase I of the RHI has been designed to support the implementation of commercial, community and public sector installations. Residential projects will also be eligible, provided a single installation is providing heat to more than one house. A full system of RHI payments will be available to domestic installations in households from 2012.

The tariffs will be paid for 20 years to eligible technologies that have been installed since 15 July 2009 with payments being made for each kilowatt-hour of renewable heat which is produced. The tariffs have been calculated to give around a 12% return on investment for biomass systems.

Once in the scheme the tariff rate an installation will receive is fixed and adjusted annually with inflation. However, as with FITs, we expect the levels of support available for new entrants to the RHI scheme will decrease over time as the costs of the equipment and installation reduce through economies of scale. The RHI is designed to cover the difference in cost between conventional fossil fuel heating and renewable heating systems which are currently more expensive, plus an additional rate of return on top.

If you are considering a small project up to around 70kW and are able to handle logs and light the boiler on a daily basis you should consider a Fröling log boiler. If you are able to source wood from your own land, this will give you significant savings in cost and carbon emissions.

If you have a small to medium-scale project and require a fully automated system with limited or no fuel handling you should consider the Pellet Boiler from the Fröling P4 range or the KWB USP and USV ranges using comprehensive control systems governing all aspects of boiler and heating operation. These are fully automatic pellet boilers suitable for use in low energy houses as well as in renovated and modernised buildings of all kinds. This level of automation makes these boilers essentially maintenance-free between periodic services apart from ash removal, once a month or less.
