Project Overview

The College Merthyr Tydfil opened in 2013 and embraces 21st century technology and practices, providing first class teaching and learning opportunities. The installation of solar PV on 5 roofs was considered, “an opportunity to meet their Carbon Social Responsibility objectives”. The main contractor decided to use Dulas because “they were very competitive and highly regarded by their supply chain”.

Implementation

The BREEAM status of the building required the system to provide a specific energy yield per annum. The complex roof design and multiple on-roof obstructions required the array layouts to be revised and adapted on several occasions in consultation with the client in order to meet the BREEAM target. The shallow Kalzip standing seam roof necessitated the use of Schletter Fix Z-15 asymmetric mounting rails in order to increase module pitch to improve module drainage and system yield. DC output from the arrays was converted to AC using multiple SMA Tripower inverters dotted around the roofs. Output from the inverters was consolidated and fed into an in-house designed and manufactured G59 control cabinet incorporating a G59 disconnection relay, type 2 surge protection, isolation units and metering.
