The Feed-in-Tariff scheme is a UK government initiative that provides financial incentives to those looking to install wind, solar and hydro systems of 5MW or less. If a householder, community or business has one of these systems installed, the FiT scheme will pay them a tariff for the electricity they generate and a tariff for the electricity they export back to the grid. Once a system is installed and registers for the FiT scheme, a fixed tariff is paid for 20 years.
FiT rates can change as often as every three months, and as they are gradually phased out over the next few years, it is important that small to medium renewables projects are managed as efficiently as possible, so as to ensure their profitability despite cuts to FiT rates.
