Client – RWE nPower

Project Overview

Dulas carry out a range of services for RWE npower renewables including instrument installation, met mast refurbishment and decommissioning of masts up to 80m. Dulas also provides services for offshore remote sensing system management. In 2008, RWE npower renewables was awarded the rights to seek planning permission to develop a wind farm in Clocaenog Forest in North Wales. The forest is located within one of seven areas (called Strategic Search Areas) set aside for the development of large-scale wind farms. Dulas installed a number of first class Vector anemometers on three masts in 2009 (meeting IEC61400-12-1 guidelines). We then undertook complete met mast refurbishment in 2012.

Implementation

Maintenance visits are conducted every 6 months to inspect the masts. This enables the client to continue to collect reliable and robust data for their campaign.

The high performance classification of the anemometers means that measurements are accurate in the actual wind conditions experienced in the field.

As instrument specialists, Dulas engineers also installed a number of other instruments. This included wind vanes and temperature sensors, aviation lights and bird diverters.

Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm will have an installed capacity of over 50MW. Data from masts installed by Dulas will contribute towards the IPC’s considerations and help RWE npower renewables to determine what kind of wind farm could be proposed for this site.
